SHARON EADES CARNES...
High School was a mixed bag: insecurities and struggles with math for which I spent hours in summer school repeating Algebra/Geometry/Trig classes; but I had fun with my older sister and friends at Sports Nights and Teen Canteen. Graduation proved a pivotal point, after which I pursued stints in college which ultimately landed me in the medical and chiropractic fields; 9 yrs as medical admin. assistant, 6 as faculty secretary, 3 yrs in labor/delivery/postpartum as registered nurse, 10 in my husband's chiropractic clinic as office RN/chiropractic assistant, and the final 15 as RN in health rooms throughout Portland Public & east county K-12 schools implementing health management plans for children with chronic illnesses and training school staff to respond to their needs, teaching puberty lessons to 5th graders, and putting bandaids on knees and soothing tummy aches, all the while perfecting property management with residential/commercial properties Mike and I owned. Retirement in 2014 was impulsive; no regrets.
Marrying Michael in 1972 has been one of my favorite endeavors. We've had a grand time together. We've 3 lovely, very independent children; Marah, in Canada with hubby and our 2 grandchildren, Joshua in Colorado and Kyle in Portland. Hard having 2 of the 3 far away, but we say it doesn't matter where they settle as long as it's an area we enjoy vacationing in.
Vacations/travel we treasure. Starting with road trips/camping around the U.S./Baja/Canada when the kids were tiny, we adventured farther exploring different modes of transportation once they were away in college: Trains/planes/buses around several European countries and Brazil, canoes on a 75 mile chain of lakes in B.C. Canada, bicycles along 225 miles of the Danube River in Germany and Austria, horseback in the Sangre de Cristo mountains in southern Colorado, white water rafts on the Deschutes R. in Oregon, and hot air balloons in Turkey. We've yet to take a cruise (high on our list), but staying active is my current passion. Next year I'm off on foot destined for Santiago de Compostela via El Camino Portuguese in Portugal and Spain with a girlfriend while Mike cycles an alternate route. When we're not traveling I'm at home gardening, reading, hands in the mud throwing and hand building pottery, volunteering, walking our hill in Boring, and cycling.
